Go.

Normally I track my firsts.  The first time went to the Opera, the first time I jumped from an airplane, the first time I had a pool party in my new house.  I relish these times and draw on the memories from time to time as I sometimes struggle to recount where all the time has gone.  But the last few months have been a different story.  I have been tracking my lasts.  Today is the last day I will be living in San Antonio.  Since the decision was made to leave, I have been mentally logging the lasts.  It began with a list of favorite restaurants to eat in before leaving town.  Some of those included L Taco for the taco norteno, Aldino’s for the pasta, Gino’s for the Italian beef and Delicious Tamales for, well, the pork tamales.  And even though we are going to the land of tamales, I had to have Delicious one last time.

For my last birthday we had our last pool party.  I will remember it as well as the first.  The last time I planted my fall flowers, the last time I saw some of my friends, and the last time I definitely drove my beloved 330i.  So many lasts and I will remember them all.  Then there are the lasts that I am not even aware of yet.  What will change over the coming months and years that is unforeseen, unforeseeable?  I am sure there will be change and I let the realization settle in so I might be accepting as things happen and not be too hard on myself for leaving.  In other words, preparing for a future without regret.

In the morning we travel to Mexico City.  And as I say goodbye to my home town since 1986 I start to understand that I am now embarking on an entirely new list of possible firsts.  After all, it was the first time I ever bought a one-way airline ticket.  Andy and are I looking forward to the adventure. If not just relieved that work of leaving has come to an end.  We are ready to close a chapter and begin anew.  The world has changed since 1986 and we have the opportunity to take advantage of the current situation which is advancing global access.  Remote working, Airbnb, Uber, inexpensive airfares, social media, and other recent occurrences have made the world a very small place.  We will be exploring our very small world in the coming years.  In the meantime, we will be sharing our Mexico adventures with you here, presently somewhere.  For now, time to go.

Special thank you to the all of the friends that provided well wishes and our going away celebrations.

The night before our flight we ordered Chinese.  These were our fortunes. Feeling good.

On your mark. Get Set.

This first blog was written October 10, 2017.  We are now up and running.  Run along with us, the Millers, while we explore Mexico!

On your mark. Get set. Go.

Going is the easy part.  Where are we going?  A permanent move from Texas to Mexico, at least Mexico for now.  Although there are moments of doubt and maybe even a little anxiety, the overall feeling can be described as excited anticipation of a bold new adventure.  Something we both have awaited for a very long time.

We are Andy and Dar.  Middle aged, married couple, no kids, no pets, ready for a change.  And like many things we do, the change is going to be big.  But I tell others that it was a ‘slow burn’.  We were certainly be bopping along with our life on the wheel.  Andy had a great VP position in a cutting edge medical software firm and I had started a small business specializing in commercial real estate services.  We had a large house in a great neighborhood with all of the accouterments.  We had lived in San Antonio for decades and have mad many friends and affiliations over the years that afforded us healthy social lifestyle.  We ate at nice restaurants, enjoyed top notch entertainment experiences, hosted friends regularly, and enjoyed our time together.

In October 2016 Andy was laid off at his Company.  It was a terrible blow.  But after some time of licking our wounds and pointing our fingers, it was time to get down to the business of change.  In our minds that change might come as a relocation to a City that we found to be fun, exciting, and new.  Seattle perhaps?  Chicago perhaps?  We had pretty much decided that it would be Chicago or one of the coasts.  And no small towns would do.  Andy started serious interviews with a company in Seattle.  We got serious about researching the city and started to get very, very excited about the possible move.  We were going to get so ‘outdoorsy’ and experience so many new things together.  It was a day dreamer’s paradise, I tell you.  And here is where the burn began.

Now the blood is pumping and change is in the air.  But Seattle was not to be, and the interviews continued. The final interview came from Chicago.  A city we have always loved and definitely lived on the YES list should an opportunity come.  I think we had mixed feelings when we learned that 100% of the company worked remotely and there would not be an immediate opportunity to be in Chicago.  The advantage? Staying in SA, not uprooting our lives, maintaining our cost of living.  All good stuff.  But the burn had already taken hold.  We were mentally ready for a change. And like the single spark that ignites a flame, the idea took hold.

If we can work remotely we can be anywhere.

And so the process began.  And in April 2017, a couple of months after Andy began his new job the discussion began.  What would a move look like?  What all would we need to do to prepare. Where would we go?  Would it really work?  I think that first couple of months working from home helped to answer the question.  Yes, if I can work for my company from here, meaning home, then home really can be anywhere.  We are invigorated.  We have taken the red pill and there is no turning back.  And why would we want to?  The future is full of exploration, growth, and new everything.  And so Mexico City it is, and what a City it is.  New sites, sounds, tastes, places, history, connections, and adventures await us in Mexico City.  We have taken our mark.  We are set.

From a walk in closet to a one suitcase commitment, this was everything I'm packing.

These are the five boxes slated for shipping.  Once we found out the cost, only one box made the cut.  It included the Steelers gear.

Visit to the Midwest

I am writing today as I wait for Andy to knock off of work for the day.   That’s always the best part of the day and it comes early since ...
